Vendidad is one of the most important and valuable Avesta scriptures. It has information about the laws, customs and traditions of ancient Zoroastrians. The Vendidad, divided into 22 Chapters called Fragards, is the only one of the 21 Nasks which has survived in entirety. The Avesta word for Vendidad is vi-daēvo dāta, Pahlavi jud-dēv-dād which. The book is called "Vendidad Sade", and sets out in full (transliterated) the Yasna, Visparad and Vendidad, in the order in which they are recited in what we must now call the "Vendidad" ceremony. It also explains that the term "Vendidad Sade" is applied .

VENDĪDĀD. i. Survey of the History and Contents of the Text. Of the three major divisions of the 21 Nasks of the Sasanian Avesta, the Vendīdād—Avestan widaēwa-dāta-, Pahl. jud-dēw-dād “The Law repudiating the Demons” (Benveniste, )—was the last of those called dādīg “dealing with law,” and 19th summary of its contents given in the 9th-century Dēnkard (Bk. Vendidad (Pahlavi) [from vi-daevo-datem the anti-demonic law] The principal book of the Avesta, consisting of 22 sections or fargards. The major part of the book is concerned with detailed instructions and teachings on how to avoid sin and defilement by moral and physical purification, "each of which teachings is based on Occult laws" (TG ).

The Vendidad, unlike the Yasna and the Visparad, is a book of moral laws rather than the record of a liturgical ceremony. However, there is a ceremony called the Vendidad, in which the Yasna is recited with all the chapters of both the Visparad and the Vendidad inserted at appropriate points.
